Portugal

Where we were: Lisbon

When we went: January 2006

Where we stayed: Marques de Pombal

Basically, we were in Lisbon for two weeks and we had a lot of fun, but for some reason I did not keep a log on this trip.

So the details are somewhat sketchy.

What I remember:

We walked over 10 miles according to our hand-held GPS.

We found three geocaches one in Edward VII Park, another near the Marques de Pombal Square and the third in an intersection under an arch that I don't know the name of.

We visited  St. George's Castle in the dowtown Baixa district.

In the Belem district, at Jeronimos Monastery we saw the resting place of Vasco de Gama. Next door we went to the Archaeology Museum.

We stumbled on an upscale German restaurant, Pano de Mano Restaurante, that was a lot of fun.

It was very difficult to find chicken on any menu, but omelletes were served at every meal.

Bruce took over 700 photos.

We walked along the futuristic Parque das Nacoes region and went to the Interactive Science Museum.

We visited the Lisbon Zoo. We were able to get quite close to many of the animals and we rode the overhead tram around the park too.

We hung out in Rossio Square and found several restaurants and cafes.

We rode the subway when we were too tired to walk anymore. One time we to a mall I don't remember the name of.

I remember a park and a shopping center near our hotel. The park had a restaurant on its grounds and I remember the crispness of the green clover and the sparkling water. We got some gelatto at the shopping center one day as well.

We took a ferry and ended up having a surreal experience at the 90 foot high Monument to Christ statue. As we were leaving we could also see the April 25 Bridge (which supposedly is the sister bridge to the Golden Gate Bridge.) Honestly, I have seen the Golden Gate bridge and it did feel almost eerily like the same bridge.

We tried to get into two libraries, but were unsucessful both times. The national library was closing as we got there; the other was not open to the public apparently, but we looked around for a few minutes before we were escorted away.
